Are you a teacher or parent helping a child learn ASL? Meet ASLstandards.org, a powerful free tool to guide ASL language development. ASLstandards.org is a research-based site that lays out clear, age-appropriate standards for American Sign Language learning, showing what signing students should know and be able to do at different grade levels. It’s designed for K–12 settings, but it’s also incredibly helpful for parents and tutors working one-on-one.
Why is this so useful? Language acquisition—especially in a visual language like ASL—depends on consistent exposure, structured support, and clear goals.
Here’s how to put ASLstandards.org into action: begin by reviewing the standards for your child’s current grade. Map lesson plans or home practice around the language domains—that is, key areas like vocabulary, grammar, and discourse. Use the detailed skill descriptions to design activities such as story retelling, conversational practice, or signing in context, and regularly revisit the standards to measure growth. Are grammar structures becoming more automatic? Is discourse more complex?
In short, ASLstandards.org is a roadmap for clarity, giving educators and parents shared language goals and helping Deaf children build ASL skills in a structured, measurable way. Visit the site, explore your grade level, and begin using these standards to support your student’s or child’s ASL journey. Together, we can build stronger, more fluent signers.
