[Lillah Harris] I am very happy to annouce that LAF Sign Language Solutions is adding a new service. In addition to our virtual interpreting services we are also going to be offerering DHH teaching services with Ms. Lakesha "KT" Trotter.
Ms Trotter earned her bachelor's degree in deaf education in 2001, and she is affectionately known as "KT" to her colleagues and friends. She has taught deaf and hard of hearing students at the Louisiana School for the Deaf in a mainstream, elementary school program and she currently works as a virtual DHH teacher.
Please listen as Ms. Trotter describes what a DHH teacher is, how the service is different from interpreting, and how the service can be beneficial to your students.
[Ms. Trotter]. A DHH teacher is different from an interpreter because a DHH teacher must go to school for four years and receive a bachelors degree with a certificate in teaching specifically geared towards deaf and hard of hearing students.
Having a DHH teacher is extremely important to the academic and social success of any child with a hearing loss. We provide a unique and specialized use of techniques and methods that are geared and focused primarily on deaf and hard of hearing children..
I meet with parents and other professionals, as well as the students to provide information and support regarding their hearing loss. I also plan instruction as needed per the IEP, the Individual Education Plan. I record students' progress, and other data as required by the IEP and school monitoring procedures.
The DHH teacher should always, always be fluent in ASL. Using American Sign Language helps that child develop and acquire language at a faster rate. DHH teachers are essential to the overall development of infants and children with hearing loss.
