NAIE Code of Ethics Tenet 3: Maintain Confidentiality

In this video, LAF SLS explores Tenet 3 of the Educational Interpreters’ Code of Ethics: maintaining confidentiality.
We’ll look at how confidentiality applies to student information, IEPs, 504 plans, professional conversations, and social media.
Learn how using good judgment and discretion can help protect student privacy and create a respectful, supportive environment.

We are continuing our discussion of the Educational Interpreters Code of Ethics as designed by the National Association of Interpreters in Education, which can be accessed by visiting naiedu.org and navigating to their resource page.

Today, we're discussing tenet number three of the Educational Interpreters Code of Ethics, which is maintaining the confidentiality of information pertaining to the interpreter's work.

Tenet number three emphasizes the core values of interpreters maintaining the confidentiality of information that's included in the student's IEP and 504 plan, and also using discretion when posting on social media, not revealing any sensitive information about their interpreting assignments.

As an example, imagine that an educational interpreter was involved in an IEP meeting that discussed a student's need for mental health services. Later, a colleague asked the interpreter, "Why does the student leave the classroom every day at this specific time?

" A professional interpreter will stop and ask themselves, "Is the person I'm speaking to directly involved in the student's educational team? Do they help to make decisions about services or support that the student needs? Is it really necessary to share this information in order to help the student have better access?

" In this way, interpreters protect the student's information and maintain confidentiality, whether in discussion, documentation, or online platforms.

Administrators play a large role in reinforcing this code of ethics regarding confidentiality by providing policies and training so that all involved understand what the expectations are, and also when sharing information is important and when it is not necessary.

Together, this helps to create an environment where deaf students can feel respected, protected, and supported.
