Tips for Educators Working with Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students

Listen as LAF SLS virtual sign language interpreter, Joshua, explains his tips for engaging and interacting with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the classroom.

Hi, my name is Joshua. I am a sign language Interpreter from Corpus Christi, Texas.

A couple of tips for any teachers or staff members working with deaf students for the first time, one would be to try your best to include the student in classroom activities or group discussions. And that's really important because, you know, when you first get to the class you're shy or nervous, which is okay, but getting them involved and engaged will really help them feel more calm and confident.

And then a second tip would be to use as many visual aids as possible.

So any drawings or pictures or videos, graphs, diagrams, charts, whatever you have available. Children just by nature most of them are visual learners and deaf children even more so, so doing that will really help them to thrive in the classroom.
